Ingredients

  • 3 medium apples, crisp, like Honeycrisp or Gala
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
    Swaps for lemon juice

    Instead of lemon juice

    • Lime juice: The same amount. A different, more floral aroma; works almost everywhere.
    • Bottled lemon juice: The same amount. More sour and flatter; fine in cooking and baking, less bright in dressings and drinks.
    • White wine vinegar or white vinegar: Half as much. Sharper, with no citrus aroma.

    More for lemon juice

  • 1 cup water, cold
  • ¼ cup peanut butter, creamy ≈ 65 g
    Swaps for peanut butter

    Instead of peanut butter

    • Sunflower seed butter: The same amount. Earthier and a little sweeter.
    • Almond or cashew butter: The same amount. Milder and less salty (add a pinch of salt).
    • Soy nut butter: The same amount. Close in taste and texture; contains soy.

  • 1 tbsp honey
    Swaps for honey

    Instead of honey

    • Maple syrup: The same amount. Thinner, with a maple flavor; a little less sweet.
    • Agave syrup: A little less (about ¾ the amount). Sweeter and very neutral; thinner.
    • Light corn syrup or golden syrup: The same amount. Less sweet and neutral (golden syrup tastes buttery).

    More for honey

Don't give honey, even baked into food, to babies under 1 year old.

  • ¼ cup granola, use certified gluten-free if needed
  • 2 tbsp mini chocolate chips
    Swaps for mini chocolate chips

Instead of chocolate and chocolate chips

    • Semisweet and bittersweet: The same amount, either way. Bittersweet is less sweet and more intense; semisweet is milder and sweeter.
    • Chopped bar chocolate for chips: The same weight (a 12 oz bag of chips is about 2 cups). Melty puddles and streaks instead of neat chips.
    • Chips for bar chocolate when melting: The same weight. Chips melt thicker and less smoothly, so ganache and glazes are a bit stiffer.

  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon (optional)
    Swaps for ground cinnamon

    Instead of cinnamon

    • Pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice: The same amount. Mostly cinnamon, with ginger, nutmeg and allspice or cloves: a little spicier.
    • Ground allspice or nutmeg: About ¼ the amount. Much stronger and different, but warm in the same way.

Steps

  1. Stir the lemon juice into the cold water in a bowl.
  2. Core the apples and cut them into thin slices, about 1/4 inch thick.
  3. Dip the slices in the lemon water and pat them dry, so they don't turn brown.
  4. Fan the apple slices out on a large plate, overlapping them like nacho chips.
  5. Warm the peanut butter in a small bowl in the microwave until it drizzles easily, about 20 seconds.
  6. Drizzle the peanut butter and honey over the apples with a spoon.
  7. Sprinkle with granola, chocolate chips and a pinch of cinnamon, if using. Serve right away.

Tips

  • Swap peanut butter for sunflower seed butter or yogurt for a nut-free version.
  • Pears work just as well as apples.

Estimate from USDA FoodData Central; not medical or dietary advice. Based on 7 of 7 ingredients.

How we estimate

We add up USDA FoodData Central values for each measured ingredient as written and divide by the recipe's 4 servings, so changing the servings or units here doesn't change a serving. Brands, swaps, trimming and cooking all change the real numbers.

Not counted: ground cinnamon (optional).

Estimated cost

About $0.95 a serving

About $3.80 for the recipe as written (4 servings).

Estimate; prices vary by store and region. U.S. average prices for September 2026 from USDA ERS Purchase to Plate prices updated with the BLS Consumer Price Index. Priced: 6 of 7 ingredients, 96% by weight.

How we estimate

Each measured ingredient is weighed as in the nutrition estimate and priced at the U.S. average: BLS's average price where BLS publishes one, else USDA ERS's Purchase to Plate price for 2017-18 raised to September 2026 with the CPI for that food group. Whole packages, store brands, sales and regions all change the real cost: treat it as a ballpark.

  • apples $2.65 ERS
  • peanut butter $0.45 ERS
  • honey $0.35 ERS
  • mini chocolate chips $0.25 ERS
  • lemon juice $0.10 ERS

Free: water (tap water).

Not priced (no official average price we can match, so not in the total): granola.

Not counted: ground cinnamon (optional, or to taste).
