How to steep tea, herbs and spices
Soak tea, herbs or spices in hot liquid, then remove them, so the liquid takes on their flavor.
Step by step
- Heat the liquid until steaming (or to the temperature the tea needs).
- Take it off the heat and add the tea, herbs or spices.
- Cover and let it sit for the time the recipe gives.
- Strain or lift them out.
How you know it's done
The liquid tastes clearly of what you steeped; taste at the low end of the time.
Common mistakes
- Steeping black tea or spices too long, which turns them bitter.
- Boiling the liquid with the herbs in it.
