Ingredients

  • 4 oz coffee, coarsely ground, about 1 1/3 cups
  • 4 cups cold water, filtered if you have it
  • ice, for serving
  • milk or water, for serving

Steps

  1. Put the ground coffee in a French press or a large jar.
  2. Slowly pour the cold water over the coffee, making sure all the grounds get wet.
  3. Stir gently until there are no dry clumps.
  4. Cover and steep in the refrigerator for 12 to 18 hours.
  5. If using a French press, push the plunger down slowly.
  6. Line a fine-mesh strainer with a paper coffee filter or cheesecloth and set it over a clean jar.
  7. Pour the coffee through slowly and let it drip through. Don't press on the grounds.
  8. Cover the jar and keep the concentrate in the fridge.
  9. To serve, fill a glass with ice and add 1 part concentrate to 1 part cold water or milk. Adjust to taste.

Tip: Use a coarse grind, like breadcrumbs. Fine coffee makes muddy, bitter cold brew.

Tip: Don't have a French press? Steep in a large jar and strain the same way.

Storage: Refrigerate the concentrate in a covered jar up to 1 week.
