Skillet Cinnamon Apples
- 4 medium apples, firm, such as Granny Smith or Braeburn
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- ⅓ cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 pinch kosher salt
- 2 tsp cornstarch
- ¼ cup water
- vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
Skillet Cinnamon Apples
- Peel and core the apples, then cut them into slices about 1/2 inch thick.
- Toss the slices with the lemon juice in a bowl so they don't brown.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the apples and cook, stirring now and then, until they start to soften at the edges.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt over the apples and stir until the sugar melts.
- In a small cup, stir the cornstarch into the water until smooth.
- Pour the cornstarch mixture into the skillet and simmer, stirring, until the sauce is thick and glossy and the apples are tender but not mushy.
- Serve warm on their own or over vanilla ice cream.
